Tutorial Dialogue Patterns: Expert vs. Non-expert Tutors
نویسندگان
چکیده
Studies of one-on-one tutoring have found that expert tutoring is more effective than non-expert tutoring, but the reasons for its effectiveness are relatively unexplored. Since tutoring involves deep natural language interactions between tutor and student, we study the tutorial dialogue patterns by comparing an expert tutor to nonexpert tutors. Our results show what behaviors constitute expertise and provide a basis for modelling effective tutorial language in intelligent tutoring systems.

Expert vs. Non-expert Tutoring: Dialogue Moves, Interaction Patterns and Multi-utterance Turns
Studies of one-on-one tutoring have found that expert tutoring is more effective than non-expert tutoring, but the reasons for its effectiveness are relatively unexplored. Since tutoring involves deep natural language interactions between tutor and student, we explore the differences between an expert and non-expert tutors through the analysis of individual dialogue moves, tutorial interaction ...
متن کاملAnnotation of Tutorial Dialogue Goals for Natural Language Generation
We annotated transcripts of human tutoring dialogue for the purpose of constructing a dialogue-based intelligent tutoring system, CIRCSIM-Tutor. The tutors were professors of physiology who were also expert tutors. The students were 1st year medical students who communicated with the tutors using typed communication from separate rooms. The tutors made use of a rich variety of strategies, some ...
متن کاملMining Collaborative Patterns in Tutorial Dialogues
We present a method to automatically detect collaborative patterns of student and tutor dialogue moves. The method identifies significant two-step excitatory transitions between dialogue moves, integrates the transitions into a directed graph representation, and generates and tests data-driven hypotheses from the directed graph. The method was applied to a large corpus of student-tutor dialogue...
متن کاملBuilding an Intelligent PAL from the Tutor.com Session Database Phase 1: Data Mining
In this poster, we describe a new research project involving the analysis of nearly 250,000 human-human tutorial dialogue transcripts (in Algebra and Physics) supplied by Tutor.com, a leading provider of online tutorial services for children and young adults. This project involves training a panel of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) recruited from among Tutor.com’s expert tutors to hand-tag a “gol...
متن کاملIdentifying Effective Moves in Tutoring: On the Refinement of Dialogue Act Annotation Schemes
The rich natural language dialogue that is exchanged between tutors and students has inspired many successful lines of research on tutorial dialogue systems. Yet, today’s tutorial dialogue systems do not regularly achieve the same level of student learning gain as has been observed with expert human tutors. Implementing models directly informed by, and even machine-learned from, human-human tut...
